Phở King is an annual male pageant hosted by UCSB’s Vietnamese Student Association since 2001. The original purpose of Phở King was to present an image of Asian males that did not coincide with common stereotypes of Asian Americans in mainstream media, but in past years, Phở King has developed to double up as a charity show in which all the proceeds go to a charity of our choice. Last year, we donated to the Thomas Fire victims, and the year before, our proceeds went towards battling human trafficking with the Catalyst Foundation. Men from not only UCSB but from all the Vietnamese Student Associations across Southern California come together to compete through modeling, questionnaire, and talent showcase segments for the title of “Phở King.” This year, we hope to raise money for Asian American families and individuals that are or have been threatened by deportation.
