Mari Kimura – The Tradition of Revolution: Improvisation, Composition and Motion Sensor for the Violin
Violinist and composer Mari Kimura will discuss and demonstrate her renown extended technique “Subharmonics”, playing pitches one octave lower than the lowest open G without changing the tuning of the violin. Since 1992, she has been dedicated to developing “Subharmonics”, composing works incorporating them. She continues to develop “Subharmonics” further to this day. In 1994 at a solo recital in New York City, Kimura introduced “Subharmonics” as a musical element to extend the violin’s range. The precise control of bow pressure and speed is necessary in order to play Subharmonics, reliably and repeatedly on demand, especially in real performance situations. Since then she has been developing the technique even further. Kimura is now able to play not only an octave below, but also many intervals below the fundamental notes, such as 3rd, 2nd and 5th below, using carefully controlled bowing technique. She will show some excerpts of her works and the methods of notating subharmonics. These different subharmonics will also afford composers broader possibilities in creating their works previously impossible on the violin.
Kimura will also demonstrate her compositions integrating interactive computer, and works written for her by other composers. She will demonstrate her recent use of motion sensor incorporated into her work for violin and interactive computer. As a founding Chair of the “Future Music Lab” at the Atlantic Music Festival since 2013, Kimura has been working with select high-level performers integrating instrumental performance, composition, improvisation and the latest technology.
