“Into the Beautiful North” Book Discussion with Fátima Suárez
4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Fátima Suárez, a graduate student in the Department of Sociology, will examine the way the UCSB Reads 2017 book, Into the Beautiful North, plays with notions of agency within the fictional Mexican community of Tres Camarones. Taking a a sociological perspective, she will compare the women who come into power after the town’s men migrate north to find work, to real world examples. Suárez will also explore gendered dynamics of the migration experience and assess the impact of the book in post-election United States. Co-sponsored with the MultiCultural Center.
