From Dreams to Deportation: The Resistance Strategies of Tunisian Post-Uprising Irregular Migrants in Southern Italy, Rayed Khedher, Ph.D.
Based on data collected over fourteen months of ethnographic fieldwork, Dr. Rayed Khedher documents what happened to the Tunisian irregular migrants who fled Tunisia and landed in Lampedusa and Sicily after the 2011 Tunisian Popular Uprising. This transnational work examines the human rights abuses perpetrated against these
migrants and argues that while the abuses, negative representations, criminalizing policies, and unlawful
deportations were demeaning and dehumanizing, they also functioned as a starting point for many migrants
to craft various types of survival mechanisms and resistance strategies.
A reception will follow the presentation.
