Please join us for the Confucius Institute lecture on this Thursday, “A Time to Heal” or “A Time to Kill”: the Communist Fight Against Rural Superstitions in Wartime China, given by Prof. Xiaofei Kang from Department of Religion, George Washington University.
This talk discusses the first Communist campaign against superstitions in its wartime headquarters, Yan’an from 1944 to 1945. In recasting shamanistic practices from “a time to heal” into “a time to kill,” the campaign offers important insights into the Communist efforts to rebuild a new culture and religious identity for rural China at the end of the Anti-Japanese War.
