Presented by Philip Deslippe, a doctoral student in the Department of Religious Studies at UCSB with a focus on Asian and metaphysical religious traditions in modern America.

Description:
Yoga seems to be everywhere in the United States today. With most cities dotted with yoga studios and the familiar sight of a yoga mat tucked underneath someone’s arm, it is safe to assume that yogic practice has firmly placed itself in the American mainstream. While it is commonly assumed that the yoga practiced today is ancient and Indian and was brought to the West during the Sixties, paradoxically it is both a relatively recent transnational invention that has also been practiced in this country for well over a century.
